Although it is hard to believe that a labor shortage will be upon us very soon, the demographics don’t lie. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that by the year 2010 we will have more than ten million more jobs than people. The Employment Policy Foundation in Washington, DC says the gap will increase to 35 million workers by 2031. If you are not retaining and developing the people you have today, you are not going to be ready for the shortages of the future. A worker shortage of this magnitude presents many challenges to organizations. First, companies must deal with the immediate obstacles associated with filling positions for which no applicant pools exist. More importantly, as the workforce continues to age and as those currently in leadership positions retire, companies must also contend with the leadership vacuum. Skills, knowledge, experience and relationships walk out the door every time someone retires and they take time and money to replace. Companies therefore need to recognize the urgent need of grooming today’s younger workforce to assume future leadership roles.
